Japan it seems like it was all pretty good quality, but you were just getting a factory guitar with a brand on it - why most listings from that era spell out "Matsumoku Epiphone" because they look a lot like other brands coming out of the same factory. I definitely appreciate that the MIC epiphones uniformly look like their gibson counterparts- a lot of those MIK ones have odd body shapes and different years and factories have diff finishes, shapes, sizes, etc. Again I have no issue with my Nashville or custom shop. How many bad posts are there regarding USA gibsons? These have apparently been going on for a few years if you listen to the forums. When production is swapped to somewhere cheaper again, people will pay more for the 'better' Chinese ones. I've said this before but didn't people say the same about the now loved Korean made, when production changed from Japan? The same also about the first Japanese. Personally I take a lot of rhe criticism with a pinch of salt, especially having three perfectly fine Chinese epiphone electrics. People rarely take the time to praise, but sure are quick enough to shout to the world about the problems out there. There's also plenty of good stories about qc, particularly what's currently coming out of the epiphone factory.
